Suzanne sings George plays Dirty Blues

22 November 2019 @ 12:00 am

Come hear about a period of musical history that has been buried since the 1940s, the dirty blues. Sung in brothels, speakeasies and vaudeville theatres by the likes of Alberta Hunter, Bessie Smith and Ethel Waters, and where musicians such as Les Paul and Louis Armstrong got their start. Songs with titles such as ‘Don’t you Feel my Leg’ which were so popular that, for a period of time, in Harlem, you could hear people singing it down the street. Or ‘King Size Papa,’ a novelty song by Julia Lee & her Boyfriends which actually went to No. 1 on the R&B charts in 1948.
Now it has been resurrected by vocalist and Vout member Suzanne Noble and pianist George Webster who perform tunes such as ‘Big Long Slidin’ Thing,’ ‘Do your Duty’ and ‘Sam the Hot Dog Man’ in their inimitable style while sharing the background to many of the tunes as well as popular jazz standards of the time. With Imogen Rodgers guesting on sax too!

Tickets £10 online or £12 on the door.
