June 30 @ 6:00 pm - 9:30 pmFree
The Stash Gallery is proud to Present the first major show of Wilma’s work, in far too long. Wilma’s paintings are not only original, funny, clever and beautifully painted, they are the lifeforce you long to see when you go to look at art. This artist should be famous and celebrated, why is she not? Wilma is more unconventional than the obvious, more adventuress than the career artist and the spirit shows in her work. Come along and enjoy, please RSVP below for the wonderful PV on the 30th June.
Wilma Johnson is an artist, writer and founder of the Neo Naturists body painted performance art group. She was born in London in 1960 and lived in Mexico, Ireland and Biarritz before returning to the city in 2016. Her memoir Surf Mama was published in 2011 by Beautiful Books.
Saturnalia at Canary Wharf (5’x4′ acrylic on canvas)Her upcoming solo show at the Stash Gallery, Naked Selfie – My Life as a Neo Naturist is a series of self portraits spanning forty years performing in venues including the Royal Opera House and the Globe Theatre. In each painting she takes on a different persona from Marie Antoinette to Alternative Miss World contestant Miss Surf Mama. The paintings capture classic moments in Neo Naturist history coming full circle from an existentialist beach barbecue on Wapping beach in 1982 to Saturnalia winter solstice ritual at Canary Wharf in 2019. The Stash Gallery is the ideal setting for the paintings as Sophie Parkin has known Wilma since the beginning of the journey seen many of these shapeshifting moments…..
