The Little Paper Slipper is a small charity that runs a programme of art workshops within refuges across the UK with women who have experienced domestic abuse. We host biennial public exhibitions that create an ever-growing installation of paper slippers and are hoping to have worked with over 170 women by the end of 2016.
What we do
The project was created by visual artist Marie-Louise Jones in 2013 and has two very important strands to the work, the first being the workshops themselves – providing an empowering and therapeutic experience for the participants, and second is the presentation of the work within the public realm creating an opportunity for people to encounter these truly powerful and emotive works which serve as a catalyst for discussion, to raise public awareness, but more than this, to engage people’s emotions. As a public we are ill-attuned to statistics, but what we do respond to are individual human voices — as expressed through the womens artwork.
Artists shoes
We are soon launching ‘Chapter II’ of the project to host workshops for 100 women in refuges across London throughout 2016. To celebrate the next phase and raise essential funds we will be hosting a launch event at Vout-O-Reenees on Thursday 9th June 2016 and are inviting selected artists to create a specially commissioned shoe which will be auctioned at the event, with all proceeds going to the charity. The shoe will be provided by Little Paper Slipper, is made of paper, and can be altered/designed in any way the artist chooses Рwhether painted, drawn on, transformed into an assemblage Рthe artist has free reign over materials and subject matter.
The papier mâché shoes will be delivered to artists over the next 2 weeks and collected end of May ready for the launch event on 9th June.
